Abstract: This research examines the impact of adult education on literacy rates in Nigeria. Adult education programs are essential for improving literacy among the adult population, which subsequently influences socio-economic development. The objectives of this study were to assess the effectiveness of adult education programs in increasing literacy rates, to evaluate the factors that contribute to successful literacy outcomes, and to identify challenges faced by adult learners. A survey research design was chosen to collect data from participants in various adult education programs, as it allows for a broad understanding of the literacy outcomes and challenges. A sample size of 350 adult learners was selected to provide a comprehensive overview. The purposive sampling technique was used to target individuals who have recently participated in adult education programs. The case study was conducted in Lagos, Nigeria, where adult literacy programs have been actively implemented. Findings indicated that adult education significantly improved literacy rates, with participants showing notable progress in reading and writing skills. However, challenges such as inadequate resources and irregular attendance were also identified. The study recommended increasing funding for adult education programs and implementing more flexible learning schedules to accommodate adult learners' needs.
